Making Lent Count

One of the wonderful things about life in church is that it has its own calendar, special days, and seasons. We know how that works in other places. School has its own year. It starts in August and is over late in May, with special days and breaks in between.

State government has its own starting and stopping, its own pace, and important days. The IRS has its own calendar with certain days to file various forms and observe certain customs.

What makes the church’s calendar important is that it helps keep our lives in the rhythm of God’s work in the world.

We are now in the season of Lent, a time that began with the placing of ashes on our foreheads to remind us that we are mortal. “From dust you came and to dust you shall return.” Lent is a time for us to remember who we are and where we are headed — to the cross. Kind of a sobering thought.

But sober is the best way to be when we find ourselves in the biggest and most important moments of lives. We don’t want to miss a thing! We want to be in full contact with all our senses! We want to be completely engaged in the moment as it comes upon us.

May Lent be a time for you to tune your senses to the wonderful work that God is doing in your life.
