On the Way

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.

No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

These words Jesus shares on the last night he meets with his disciples before his death. The way to the cross is just around the bend now. Where is Jesus going? He’s speaking so cryptically now.

The Easter surprise, though, is that the way of Jesus continues beyond the cross and tomb. Alleluia! Christ has risen! He has risen indeed. Alleluia!

It is not a path that is exclusive as if all other religions are exempted from connection with God. It’s a particular path for followers of Christ. The Risen Jesus is the way for us, is on the way, and meets us wherever we are.

Many understand this verse to be merely about entry into heaven when we die. It’s much more than that. It’s about the present, now.

Have you ever looked back on life and wondered how you got to today? The truth is God made you and irrevocably loves you. Your life is a gift. It matters to the people around you, whether you believe that or not. More importantly, it matters to God.

Trust that the power of God’s presence is with us now, for we are already well on the way. Whatever juncture of life you’ve reached: the end of a school year, graduation, the beginning or the end of a job or career, a move, a diagnosis, or the end or the beginning of a relationship, may you feel the comfort of the Spirit’s gentle presence guiding you forward.
